On the surface having regional PDC's in a movie theater seems like a reasonable idea.  But if you have ever been at a PDC you know your days and nights are very busy if you want to take in a large portion of the show.  One reason you get to do so much is that all the food is very accessible and the hotels are close as well.  To try to do that same thing in multiple locations would be a mess and have Microsoft worrying more about logistics, than content.  Yes, the miscellaneous expenses would be a little less by driving up to Minneapolis, but you would miss out on talking directly with the Microsoft engineers.  And don't forget about the time differences.

During the podcast a program called KXAML (at least i think that's what it was called), I can't find any information about it anywhere. Are you able to provide some links?
