Heartland Dev Con Soon Approaching

8/31/2007 10:41:00 AM
bethere_2007

The Heartland Developer Conference 2007 is fast approaching (Oct 18/19).  It's a short one hour plane flight or six hour drive (from the Twin Cities) to this year's location - Omaha, NE.  The Old Market area of downtown Omaha provides a great place to hang out following the sessions and the content and presenters are top notch. Scott Guthrie is one of the big headliners, and yours truly will be delivering a session on building applications with WPF and Blend.

The Heartland DevCon is a fantastic local event. By supporting local events like this, you make it possible for great technical content to be delivered right in your own backyard by some of the top tech heads in the .NET community. Cool tech conferences shouldn't be for just the East and West coasts! Tell your friends, coworkers, and family to get signed up for this great event.

Make sure to sign up and see you there!

Get Some Cool WPF Graphics from SVG and More

8/31/2007 9:27:00 AM

Via Rob Relyea, two good nuggets of knowledge on how to get some cool graphics represented as XAML for use in your WPF or Silverlight applications.  Two great tools for non-designers to get some nice graphic images into their apps - Paste2XAML and Tim Heuer's PDF to XAML workflow (screencast).

If You are a College Football Fan

8/31/2007 6:50:26 AM

then you are usually one of two camps - you either hate Notre Dame or you love 'em.  I'm in the smaller third camp that doesn't really care if they have a good or bad season, but I loathe the media hype they get year in and year out.  The over-hype of Charlie Weiss (aka Jabba) has made me want to puke on many occasions.  And if I hear the phrases "Return to Glory" or "Awaken the Echoes" one more time I could be driven over the edge.  How many times to you get to "Return to Glory"?

ESPN, amazingly, has an article on under achieving football programs.  Unfortunately, my beloved Michigan State Spartans make the list (as well they should), but by miracle of miracles the writer (Pat Forde) had the hutzpa to but ND on the list with this summary...

Notre Dame -- The only school on the list to have won a national championship during the period in question. But that was 1988, and since '93 the Fighting Irish have been awfully ordinary. When it's been 14 years since your last bowl win, you're nothing special.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

Woodbury Longhorns First Game - T-9 Days

8/30/2007 2:46:00 PM
longhorn I've been coaching my son in football every year since he was in 1st grade.  Our first two years of flag football were nothing to write home about (3-6 and 1-8).  I had actually thought that I might not be cut out for coaching (not all players make good coaches, as you all probably well know).  I had decided to make his third grade year my make or break year since it was a) tackle instead of flag, and b) 11 man vs. 7 man.

Obviously things have gone well since I am heading into my fifth year of coaching.  The first two seasons have been pretty good (7-1 and 6-3 --- should have been 7-2 but we got JOBBED by the refs in one game).  I have found that I absolutely love coaching football, but it absolutely turns me into a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.  I have trouble sleeping since I lay awake thinking about what still needs to be done.  I count the hours during the day until practice.  I miss exits because I am mulling over player assignments as I drive some where.  But I still love it.

We have a very ambitious offensive scheme this year and I thought we had bit off more than we could chew a couple weeks ago when  we had a make shift scrimmage for 30 minutes against a team that shares our practice field.  But we did ok in our official pre-season jamboree and the kids are making huge strides with each practice so I am somewhat cautiously optimistic (coaches are never really comfortable with where they are at I have come to learn).  Defensively, we totally scrapped the direction we were going after our first mini-scrimmage (a 4-3 scheme with some mods for young players and league rules) and have now gone to a 3-5-3 scheme, a la West Virginia.  We installed that scheme an hour before our Jamboree and the kids played orders of magnitude better in that scheme than in the earlier scrimmage.  We are a bit small (probably smallest team in the league), but we are fairly quick, so the 3-5-3 helps a lot in that regard.  I'm glad I am not above throwing out my plan and willing to adapt to my players.

We have our first game on Sept 8th against a team that I think we are fairly evenly matched.  We might have a slight edge but hard to say.  We then follow that up with two tough opponents.  So what's left to be done before our first game?  Offensively, it is mostly repetition at this point.  We are running a variant of the Wing T and while some say you can't teach kids this young to pull guards, I think we have managed to pull it off.  We will still be adding a few plays over the course of the season, but we are ready to go for our opener.  Special teams still needs some work but we will get there.  The D is looking good but tackling is still a concern - way to much arm tackling right now.

We have three practices left to get the kinks ironed out and then the fun starts.

The Web's "UnDo" Problem

8/30/2007 10:31:58 AM

Nice little intro to the concept of the "UnDo" problem on the Universal Desktop by Ryan Stewart.  Certainly worth thinking about when you are trying to decide between web or desktop applications and the type of users and usage patterns you expect.

Microsoft ArcREADY Event Coming to Minneapolis - Sept 19th

8/30/2007 7:08:26 AM

After Tim O’Reilly’s article “What is Web 2.0” in 2005, there has been considerable buzz around Web 2.0 technologies and the companies that use them.  From the open platform Facebook to the rich user interfaces of web mail clients like Microsoft Exchange, the architecture of web applications is changing rapidly.  Jon Rauschenberger, CTO for Clarity Consulting, together with the Central Region Architect Evangelists, will discuss lessons learned and best practices around collaboration, rich user experiences, and data syndication from existing Web 2.0 application architectures.  We’ll also provide guidance on how current Microsoft platform technologies like AJAX for ASP.NET, SharePoint Server 2007, and WCF can be used to turn those lessons into a practical corporate Web 2.0 architecture.  Finally, we’ll take a look at the next generation of Microsoft technologies like Silverlight and Visual Studio 2008 and discuss how architects can design and deploy applications beyond the current Web 2.0 experience.

Session 1: “What is Web 2.0: Beyond the Buzzword”

Session 2: “Architecting Web 2.0 Applications on the Microsoft Platform”
