Yet Another Twist in One of the Longest, Strangest Product Cycles Ever

10/21/2005 6:39:06 AM
This eWeek article covers yet another twist in the long and strange history of MBF. Anyone remember the announcemnt of ObjectSpaces back at a PDC that was two or three PDCs ago (I want to say 2001 or something but not sure). ObjectSpaces then went into a blackhole, briefly resurfaced, and then got sucked into the MBF vortex which had its own collection of fits and starts. Sheesh...

Service Orientation Patterns: October CTP featuring WSE 3.0

10/20/2005 2:20:30 PM
We invite you to check out the latest release of the Web service security patterns. This release is a substantial improvement over the past releases. We’ve added even more patterns and updated the implementation patterns to take advantage of the latest advancements in WSE 3.0. Please note that the WSE 2.0 implementation patterns have been removed from this release. We will add them back for the final release, but if you would like to review the WSE 2.0 implementation patterns in the meantime, check out the August CTP.

When You Are Right, You Are Right!!!

10/18/2005 5:15:19 AM
This Yahoo article is all but a smoking gun to my earlier post about the dangers of Google becoming your "benevolent dictator" of web based services and free wireless access. Per the article, "'Google may use personal information to display customized content and advertising, develop new services and ensure that its network continues to function" - sounds like carte blanche to me but where is the uproar??????

HDC 2005 Rocked!!!!

10/17/2005 2:30:12 AM
The Heartland Developer Conference 2005 is in the books and what a fantastic 2nd year it turned out to be! 309 developers (with over 100 on the waiting list) descended on Cedar Rapids, IA to attend the largest grass-roots developer conference in the United States. Organized by local .NET User Groups, the two day conference featured speakers from around the country with such notables as Rob Howard, Andrew Troelsen, and others. Local .NET influentials also got into the act with guys like Javier Lozano, Robert Boedigheimer, Phil Wolfe, and Matt Milner (among others) also delivering sessions. Supported by local (Sogeti, New Horizons, Magenic, Intertech, and others) and national (Microsoft, AMD, and INETA) sponsors, attendees only had to pay $75 dollars to get two days of keynotes and sessions on both current and future .NET technologies.

The entire Crown Plaza Five Seasons hotel was sold out with HDC attendees. The conference began with a pre-conference party and finished with the giveaway of a fully tricked out AlienWare PC donated by AMD. The first full day of the conference included and evening party with a gaming zone that despite a couple of technical difficulties early on, was a bit hit with everyone that attended. I spoke with both attendees and sponsors and the feedback was unequivocal in this being one of the best conferences in the country.

Special kudos go out to Joe Olsen, Phil Wolfe, and Eric Johnson for being the driving force behind this conference. These guys are dedicated community leaders that put in an incredible amount of time and effort to make the second HDC bigger and better than ever. And the best thing about these guys is that this year’s conference had not even wrapped up and they were already discussing ways to make next year’s event surpass 500 developers and improve on an already great conference.

For those that are interested, the slides to my presentation, How to Build an ASP.NET Portal in About an Hour, are available for download in the Downloads section. I should have the code for the demo posted later this week (as soon as I get my USB drive in the mail - thanks Phil for grabbing that!!!!).

Update: The code for the presentation has been added to the slide deck download above. It is not an exact match to what I did in the presentation since I tend to hack some stuff on the fly, but it is pretty darn close.

Update 2: Download link fixed.

Where are the Email Web Services?

10/7/2005 7:53:22 AM
Thinking more about the idea of weblications, I was wondering why we haven't seen someone like Hotmail or Google release a true web services based API on top of their email services. There are lots of efforts to drive access to Google (see here for one) via HTTP requests, but these are really shims and not true APIs offered by Google a la similar services you see from Amazon and eBay. I couldn't find any similar efforts for Hotmail, but I didn't dig to hard.

Of course, Google now offers POP access, so maybe that eliminates the need for web service APIs. Hotmail is also available via clients like Outlook Express and like clients. But it still seems more natural in this day and age to expose stuff via web services, especially if you plan on adding other services like calendaring, file storeage, whatever. It would be cool to point to a WSDL on Google and suck in email services, calendaring, file storage, etc. Maybe its out there and I just haven't found it after spending 1.48 minutes researching this.

FairTax? Heard About It for the First Time

10/6/2005 7:27:04 AM
I was driving to Des Moines and heard about the FairTax for the first time. I had heard of the Flat Tax, but not the Fair Tax. Apparently this is a bill that is working its way through Congress. It's interesting and I am tempted to say that anything has to be better than the current system, but its tough to swallow a 23% national sales tax! The details explain how this is really not all that bad but there are a few assumptions that have to come true to make it sound ok. Of course, I don't see our current system ever getting fundamentally reformed, much less scraped, in my wage earning years, or perhaps even lifetime. Call me a cynic, but there are just too many special interests involved in the current tax code to let the system be tinkered with in a fundamental way.
