After reading this
Microsoft Watch article, it is even more painfully obvious that it does not take much skill to be a tech journalist.
The big revelation in this piece is that Longhorn will not be written entirely in managed code. Well, NO SHIT! Except for a brief bit of confusion about two years ago (kinda sad that Longhorn has been on the drawing board that long), I have never seen anything that said Longhorn would be all managed code. As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember sitting through PDC 2003 sessions covering WinFX and specific remarks being made about how WinFX was in many cases a wrapper around native APIs since it didn't make sense for much of the OS to be managed.
What I found even more amazing is that they were able to obtain some choice quotes from ex-Microsoftie
Joel Spolsky supporting the idea that native code in Longhorn was some kind of backtrack by Microsoft. How did Joel miss this one? My only guess is that there is still some confusion (including myself) on how tightly aspects of the CLR will be tied to the Longhorn OS. Perhaps that is what Joel is referring to by it was twisted a bit to support the premise of the article.
I think I need to start sniffing around for one of these tech journalist jobs. I can make up crap just as well as they can.
